Anyone remotely familiar with Uber probably knows about surge pricing, which raises the fare for the car service when supply is limited. This is especially common on holidays that involve a lot of drinking.
Halloween is one of those holidays (at least for adults), and when Baltimore resident and potential Worst Person Alive Gabrielle Wathen woke up on Nov. 1, she discovered shemanaged to pay $362.57 for a 20-minute ride to her house after a birthday and All Hallows’ Eve celebration.
Most people would be forced to live with the consequences of their drunken stupidity, but Wathen decided to see if the Internet would be willing to help her out.
She turned to GoFundMe and created a page called Uber Stole My 26th Birthday, whereshe attempted to convert her fundamental misunderstanding of capitalism into free money from strangers.
This alleged adult who most likely willingly spent the night consuming overpriced alcohol before taking a cab home had this to say,
Not only is it my 26th birthday, it is rent day. My rent is $450 and I can no longer pay it today due to this completely outrageous charge. This misunderstanding has cost me 80% of the funds I have to my name I feel taken advantage of and cheated by the Uber name.
Please donate even just $1 if you think this is utter and complete bullsh*t and also hilarious and very, very depressing at the same time.
The page raised $573 before being taken down last night, proving the Internet will pay for any cause as long as it’s stupid enough.
I apologize for having literally zero sympathy for the person paying $45o in rent who managed to ignore the screen that tells you you’re about to pay a lot of money when surge pricing goes into effect.
